Ashanti, our photographer this week, snapped some pictures of students finishing up first drafts of their argumentative essays. Some were researching on computer, some collaborating, and others working independently.
Students created posters and presented the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. These will be reviewed frequently and serve as a foundation for students to be successful in our classroom. Our Global Read Aloud for The Fourteenth Goldfish starts on Monday. Today the students had a question dealing with the book to answer. On Padlet they answered, "Do you think it would be good to be young forever?".
You can check their responses here: http://padlet.com/cjamerson/vwdj09qtug4i We are so excited to begin reading The Fourteenth Goldfish on Monday! We will be connecting with classes throughout the United States and around the world that are also reading this book aloud in class.
Here is information on the Global Read Aloud: http://www.globalreadaloud.com/ Why the Global Read Aloud?Global collaboration is necessary to show students that they are part of something bigger than them. That the world needs to be protected and that we need to care for all people. You can show them pictures of kids in other countries but why not have them speak to each other? Then the caring can begin. The address to our classroom blog is: http://kidblog.org/MrJamersons5thGradeClass
The students really enjoy working on their blogs and communicating their ideas to a worldwide audience. It will be exciting to see how much the students' writing improves over the course of the school year. We greatly appreciate the book orders turned in for the month of September. Due to the amount of orders, we received a free $15 book for the classroom. The book I chose was "The One and Only Ivan" and it will be our next classroom read aloud.
Picture Day will be on Tuesday, September 9. Order forms were sent home last week. Even if not ordering a picture package, this is also the opportunity to order a yearbook. Every year we hav
Jamerson Math Updates We will have a Chapter 1 test on Wednesday, September 3. Tonight’s homework is the Chapter Review on pages 67-68-69. I normally don’t assign math homework. The majority of my assessments of the students are taken by scoring the work completed in class. I did want to assign the chapter review for homework so that you could help your child prepare for Wednesday’s test. There may be times when I recommend students work on a particular skill at home if he/she seems to be struggling compared to classmates. I encourage students to work on math facts at home. Any student that does not have every multiplication and division fact 0-9 memorized will eventually have some difficulties in 5th grade math. It’s not too late to work on mastery, though. I have started a classroom website at: jamerson5.weebly.com . There is not much on the site yet, but I will eventually use it to keep you up to date on happenings in our classroom. Starting today, I will post assignments from my classes on the page. Students can access the math textbook at: http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/school/t4m3 . There are also resources that can be printed off if you feel your child needs extra practice. While we turn in most work in-class, you can still go back to past lessons even work on future lessons at home to help prepare your child. Each student was given a card with a password for this site. Please contact me at [email protected] if the password has been misplaced. Thank you! |
